Boat De-Winterizing Checklist

  1. Exterior

    •  Remove and inspect boat cover

    •  Clean and wash hull & deck

    •  Wax the exterior

    •  Inspect hull for cracks, blisters, or damage

  2. Engine & Fuel System

    •  Inspect engine for corrosion or damage

    •  Change engine oil & filter

    •  Replace fuel filter/water separator

    •  Check fuel lines for cracks or leaks

    •  Top off fuel tank with fresh gas

    •  Add fuel stabilizer (if needed)

  3. Battery

    •  Reconnect battery terminals

    •  Clean battery terminals

    •  Fully charge battery

    •  Test battery voltage (should be ~12.6V or more)

  4. Cooling System

    •  Flush antifreeze (if applicable)

    •  Inspect hoses and clamps

    •  Reconnect hoses as required and align valves

  5. Propeller & Drive System

    •  Inspect propeller for dings or damage

    •  Tighten prop nut and install cotter pin

    •  Check and change lower unit gear oil

    •  Grease all fittings (steering, tilt, trailer, etc.)

  6. Electrical & Controls

    •  Test navigation lights

    •  Test bilge pump and float switch

    •  Test horn, radio, GPS, fishfinder, etc.

    •  Inspect wiring and fuses

  7. Interior

    •  Clean interior surfaces

    •  Check for mold or mildew

    •  Inspect canvas, bimini tops, cushions

    •  Organize storage compartments

  8. Safety Gear

    •  Check life jackets (PFDs)

    •  Inspect fire extinguishers (fully charged & not expired)

    •  Check signaling devices (flares, air horn, etc.)

    •  Restock first-aid kit

    •  Test carbon monoxide and fire detectors

  9. Paperwork

    •  Renew boat registration

    •  Review/renew insurance policy

    •  Check trailer tags (if applicable)

  10. Final Prep & Test

    •  Inspect trailer (tires, lights, bearings)

    •  Perform dry start with muffs/hose (watch temp, smoke, leaks)

    •  Check steering and throttle controls

    •  Inspect anchor and dock lines
